Frequently Asked Questions

How can I be sure that my diamond hasn’t been switched?
We are often asked this question, and the answer is really quite simple. No two diamonds are exactly the same, and each is as unique as a fingerprint. We look at your diamond under a microscope and draw a plot (map) of its birthmarks. Then, we show you the plot. Once you have seen your diamond under the microscope, you will be able to identify it upon pick up.

I want to have something custom made. Do you design jewelry?
Yes, we would be happy to custom design something for you. Or, if you have an idea, we can build it. To see some of our recent work, we invite you to come in to our store or visit our custom jewelry page.

I have seen the tension set rings, are they secure?
Much like you, when we first saw this design technique years ago, we were concerned with its securing capabilities. However, once the designer insisted that we try to pry the diamond free, it became apparently clear that it could not be done. So yes, this diamond is absolutely secure. In fact, the ring is made around a specific diamond and secured under 65 to 95 pounds of pressure.

Do you do jewelry repair in your store, or do you send out the work?
We have two very talented bench jewelers located in our store, which allows us to do customer repairs on site. In addition to jewelry repairs, we also perform most of our custom manufacturing on-site, as well.

What is the difference between platinum and white gold?
Platinum and gold are two completely different materials based on entirely different characteristics. Platinum is softer than white gold creating its well-known dull finish trait. Platinum is also naturally white, where as white gold has a slightly yellowish hue even after palladium or nickel have been added to “bleach” the gold. Platinum is also 90% to 95% pure platinum, while 14k gold is only 58.5% pure gold—and 18k gold is only 75% pure gold. Feel free to ask us about the pros and cons of platinum verses white gold upon your visit to our store.

I often see jewelry advertised for 60% off, does Plateau Jewelers ever offer discounts?
We do not participate in the common retail practice of marking items up and then discounting them on sale. We believe you are better served by not having to negotiate a deal. We price our merchandise fairly and honestly to offer good value year round.

How do I know I am getting what I am paying for?
If you want to be assured of the value, we suggest an appraisal from a qualified independent appraiser.

Are you a member of any professional jewelry association?
Yes we are, and we are most proud of our membership in the American Gem Society. Less than 2,000 of the 25,000 jewelers in the U.S. and Canada have been accepted into this organization.

Do you offer gift-wrapping?
We would be happy to gift-wrap your purchase. We offer a complimentary Boehm’s chocolate, as well.

Should I have my fine jewelry insured?
Yes, and most often homeowner’s insurance policies only cover up to $1,500. You may need to have jewelry items listed separately on your policy. Check with your insurance agent or contact Jewelers Mutual. They specialize in jewelry insurance.
